The Return of the Light

Terry Kelleher - 1999

Once more we join in a circle together.
Once more we sing of change in the weather.
Last winter we gathered and sang in the night.
Now we rejoice the return of the light.

In winter so bleak, we cursed at the snow.
We shoveled it out, and froze all our toes.
We trudged through the slush piles and scraped off our windshields.
Dreamed through the long nights of warm sun and green fields

This Mayday we dance, and tie up a tree,
With ribbons of color in marvelous weave.
Next winter at solstice we’ll take a piece up the hill,
With a dozen from past Mays, our fire to build.

Here’s to Phil and Mary, this party they host.
And to the wood cutters, who set up this post.
And all of you good friends who dance round the Maypole.
May your grass yards grow slow and your gardens be fruitful.
